Three Feingold Staffers Test Positive For Anthrax Exposure

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin, has confirmed that three staffers in Feingold's Washington D.C. office have tested positive for exposure to anthrax. Feingold's Senate office is adjacent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle's office. Daschle, D-South Dakote, announced earlier that 25 members of his staff and six Capitol security officers have tested positive for exposure to anthrax.

Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
    October 17, 2001

On Monday, a letter sent to the office of Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD)
was found to contain a substance that tested positive for anthrax.
Because my Washington D.C. office is right next to Senator Daschle's
mail room, members of my staff were tested on Monday for the presence
of the anthrax bacteria. So far, the test results for two of my
staffers have come back positive for the presence of the bacteria.
This does not mean that those staffers are infected, only that those
people were exposed to the anthrax bacteria. As a precaution, those
staffers will be on the full 60-day regimine of antibiotics.

Senate authorities have closed the Hart Senate Office Building so that
the entire building can be examined. My Washington office, which is
located in the Hart Building, will be closed until this process is
complete. My State offices continue to be open and available to help
    the people of Wisconsin.
