Subject: Message from the Governor's Office and Capitol Police

As per Capitol Police:

What should I do if I open a letter and discover a suspicious substance?

  • Remain calm. Do not panic.
  • Put the letter down and leave it undisturbed.
  • Inform others in the area that you have a suspicious substance and that Capitol Police should be called and informed.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and then wash your face thoroughly.
  • Wait for the police to arrive and follow their instructions.
  • All other people in the area should refrain from touching the object, but should wait for the police to arrive to give additional instructions.
